Today we come across the beautiful S11 House by Archicentre in Malaysia. The S11 house is located in an established older suburb of Petaling Jaya.

An old 1960s building has been converted and the outcome is rather impressive. Modern, yet comfortable, we love the mix between minimalist furniture, natural wood and the unfinished brick walls.

With a lot of hard work and effort, the working team managed to keep the naturalness and the purity of the place, and also turned it into a perfectly livable, functional and modern home.  If you take a tour through each room in the house, it would be difficult to determine if you were still in the same home. The home features plenty of modern design elements, but doesn’t really stick to one consistent theme throughout. The design team opted for a handful of materials for the walls and floors including, but not limited to brick, concrete, hardwood, and even marble.

The S11 house has a clear north-south orientation for all its openings and windows. The east and west walls were deliberately void of any significant glazed openings and were constructed of better insulated aerated light weight concrete blocks. The home is also designed with a series of wind turbines combined with glazed pyramids that create “stack effect” ventilation due to temperature differentials. This helps to keep cooling needs low. The roof is a large, insulated canopy made from recyclable steel metal sheets coated in a light white paint, which minimizes heat absorption. Roof insulation was also used made from 200mm thick rockwool and two layers of reflective foil. Ventilated air space also separates the metal roof from the rockwool. The solar hot water heaters are also located on the large roof area.
