Barcelona based architecture firm Magma have just completed The V House: a beautiful new residence on the bluffs of Costa Brava, a tiny coastal region in northeast Spain. Placed  on a steeply sloping site, the  stone perimeter wall of rough quarry blocks limited the Mediterranean garden. Above it, the main floor is raised to the maximum allowable height for the view and the open horizon, configured as a large horizontal platform. The house is divided into two sections, which respectively house the bedroom and living areas, divided by a strip that contains the entrance and stairs. The team goes on to explain that “The site, which is very steep,” therefore they built the home on a large stone base, on which stands a large horizontal platform. “The permeable cut of the staircase subdivides the platform into two independent bodies.” Ultimately, the V House can function as a single-family dwelling, but can flex into a multi-family dwelling where public areas, the pool, and balconies, become shared when needed. The platform of the house is extended on a large terrace which houses the pool, gets the sun from the south and projects westwards towards the views of the bay, as if floating on the sea. Half the terrace is projecting, while the other half has a series of laminated wood arcades that enable it to be covered entirely with large awnings.
